Document Describing the XML Release of the Specification

I believe I've been able to properly correlate most elements and attributes from the released XML document containing the prefixes, base units, and units to items in the specification. However, I am having a bit of trouble with the contents of the <printSymbol> element. Specifically, I'm not sure what the <r> element represents. (An example is the print symbol for the permittivity of vacuum.)

I haven't been able to find a document that describes the released XML document; if there is one available, I'll look there. Otherwise, guidance on the <r> element would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time!

The content of the <printSymbol> element is simply basic HTML.

  • the default is roman font
  • <i> switches to italics (e.g. print symbols for quantities are italicised, and natural constants are such quantity symbols used as units.)
  • <r> is back to roman (e.g., a subscript under a symbol of a natural constant)
  • subscript
  • superscript

In principle other HTML text formatting elements could occur, but are unlikely to occur.
