Avoid SPAM better

As myriads of tickets between the 50s and 70s (now all closed as invalid so far) indicate, this Trac system has a massive problem with spam.

While understanding the somewhat limited resources of UCUM or Regenstrief when it comes to maintaining such Wiki or issue tracker, the so far good reputation of the UCUM standard in various industries shall not be jeopardized by such cybercriminals and their actions.

For all entries identified as spam the user should be deleted and where possible email address blocked (I know they change them more frequently than their underwear ;-) Based on new registrations over the last few months, year or so it won't be too hard to find a better approach, ideally just as simple as requesting email permission by the host before being able to create new tickets. Both spam robots and manual data entry "slaves" (or "Work from Home and Get Rich victims" ;-) should be avoidable if the motivation and background of the person who requests access is questioned. E.g. which institution or project one works for.

It is indeed a pain. I just deleted these many spam tickets.

We have placed a CAPTCHA for signing up and you need to be signed up in order to post a ticket. But apparently a human being has taken the pain to do this mess.

We should have caught this earlier and barred this user more quickly.

We should put scripts in place to do the following:

  • any verified user can mark a ticket as !SPAM
  • tickets marked !SPAM will be automatically deleted within hours
  • the creator of the respective ticket is automatically banned

Spam has become quieter. By starving the spammers of their pay-off it has pretty much stopped.
