Hits on Google, we need a paper which establishes this unit not only to be mentioned internally in some experiment, but where a measurement expressed in these arbitrary fluorescence unit are actually exchanged, communicated.

Comment from Dan Vreeman:

Prior board member comment was the need for scientific supporting evidence that this unit was used/exchanged. A quick pubmed search and I could not find further information. This paper about bacterial fluorescence suggests that completely arbitrary (“a.u.”) or various normalized units against some control cell sample (e.g., RPU, ratiometric, REU) are used but characterizes and recommends an approach using independent calibrants. Given the lack of clarifying references, I recommend that we close this ticket as "insufficient evidence available" or something to that effect.
