Description (last modified by )
For food labeling 21 CFR Part 101.9 (b) (5) (viii) requires metrically aligned customary units:
"For nutrition labeling purposes, a teaspoon means 5 milliliters (mL), a tablespoon means 15 mL, a cup means 240 mL, 1 fl oz means 30 mL, and 1 oz in weight means 28 g."
UCUM has:
tablespoon | [tbs_us] | 1 | [foz_us]/2 |
teaspoon | [tsp_us] | 1 | [tbs_us]/3 |
cup | [cup_us] | 16 | [tbs_us] |
and then traces fluid ounce and ounce through the factors/division by 2, 12, or 16 used in the customary unit system. So you end up with odd numbers:
- 1 [foz_us] = 29.5735 mL
- 1 [cup_us] = 236.5882 mL
- 1 [tsp_us] = 4.9289 mL
- 1 [tbs_us] = 14.7868 mL
- 1 [oz_av] = 28.3495 g avoirdupois ounce
- 1 [oz_ap] = 31.1035 g apothecaries ounce
we could potentially add metric spoons and ounces:
- 1 [foz_m] = 30 mL
- 1 [cup_m] = 240 mL
- 1 [tsp_m] = 5 mL
- 1 [tbs_m] = 15 mL
- 1 [oz_m] = 28 g
may be that is what we should do.
